Incremental Education, a non-profit organization, dedicated to equipping students with essential skills required to thrive in the competitive job market. Our mission is to provide comprehensive career readiness tools while fostering an entrepreneurial mindset, preparing students for diverse career pathways. Many Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college graduates possess strong technical abilities but lack vital soft skills such as communication, networking, and self presentation. These skills are crucial in navigating the modern job market and achieving long-term career success. To address this gap, Incremental Education will launch the Hospitality Career Readiness Academy, providing career development training to 600 hospitality students from 18 TVET colleges across the country. The academy will focus on bridging the gap between technical skills and essential soft skills. The training will cover areas such as CV and cover letter writing, email etiquette, interview skills, LinkedIn profiling, and entrepreneurial development. Through this initiative, we aim to unlock the full potential of students, empowering them to excel in their careers.
TVET colleges in South Africa offer National Accredited Technical Education Diploma (NATED) programs, overseen by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). These programs combine 18 months of theoretical instruction with 18 months of practical workplace experience, producing graduates skilled in engineering, business, and utility studies. For students to receive the National N Diploma (Level 6), they must complete a minimum of 18 months of in-service training. Despite strong technical knowledge, many TVET students struggle to secure in-service training opportunities due to a lack of essential soft skills. During recruitment for our J-1 cultural exchange program, which provides a 12-month hospitality work experience in the U.S., we observed that TVET students were often hindered by inadequate soft skills, preventing them from successfully navigating the job market.
In response to this issue, Incremental Education was established to support both students and TVET faculty members in developing critical soft skills. Through the Hospitality Career Readiness Academy, we aim to bridge the skills gap, empower students, and improve their employability prospects. This program will not only benefit the students but also contribute to strengthening South Africa’s vocational education system by fostering well-rounded professionals equipped for the challenges of today’s labour market.
